MERCURY
- Mercry is the smallest planet and the closest to the sun.
- It is the fastest planet in our Solar System.
- Mercury has no satellites.
- Mercury revolves around the sun in 88 days.
- The United States Mariner 10 became the first and only spacecraft to reach Mercury.
VENUS
- Venus is the earth's nearest planetary neighbour.
- Venus is the brightest planet in the Solar System
- Venus is called both the ‘Evening Star’ and the ‘Morning Star’.
- Venus has no satellites.
- Venus is known as Earth's "twin" because the two planets are so similar in size.
EARTH
- Earth is the only planet in the Solar System on which the presence of living things is definitely known.
- According to the most recent estimate, the Earth is 4.55 billion years old.
- The Earth spins on an axis that is tilted at 23.50 from to a line perpendicular to its path around the Sun. Earth is the fifth largest planet of the solar system. The average temperature of the earths’s surface is 16o C .
- Earth takes 23 hours, 56 minutes and 4.09 seconds to spin around once. This length of time is called sidereal day.
MARS
- Mars is known as the Red Planet because of its reddish -orange appearance in the sky.
- Mars is the only planet whose surface can be seen in detail from the Earth.
- It has two satellites Phobos and Deimos.
- In 1997, a probe called Mars Pathfinder landed on Mars. This probe contained an explorer vehicle called Sojourner.
- Pathfinder transmitted detailed panoramic colour photographs of Mars's landscape.
- Sojourner transmitted information about the chemical makeup of rock and soil samples.
JUPITER
- Jupiter is the largest Planet in the Solar System.
- The four largest moons are - Ganymede, Callisto, Io and Europa were discovered by Galileo Galilei in 1610 and are called Galilean satellites after their discoverer.
- Ganymede is the largest satellite in the Solar System.
SATURN
- Saturn is the second largest planet in the Solar System, the sixth from the sun.
- Saturn is known as ‘Ring Planet’.
- Saturn has 22 recognised satellites and the Titan is the second largest satellite in the Solar System.
- Titan is one of the few satellites in the solar system known to have an atmosphere.
- Saturn's atmosphere is 91 percent hydrogen by mass.
URANUS
- Uranus is the third largest Planet in the Solar System.
- It was discovered in 1781 by William Herschel.
- Uranus is known as tilted planet.
- The largest satellite of Uranus is Titania.The smallest is Cordelia.
NEPTUNE
- Neptune is the fourth largest planet in the Solar System.
- Neptune was first discovered in 1846 by Johann Galle.
- Its atmosphere contains hydrogen, helium, methane and ammonia .
- Triton is the Neptune's largest satellite.
